Building Connection Through Community

Category: Senior Living

Author: Karla Christophene, Resident Services Director

As Resident Services Director at The Boulevard Senior Living of St. Peters, I’ve seen how a strong sense of community transforms senior living. It turns a place to stay into a place to truly thrive. Building connections among residents, team members, and the surrounding neighborhood isn’t just helpful — it is essential for well-being, joy, and purpose.

Creating a Warm and Welcoming Community

Creating community begins with understanding what makes each resident feel valued and included. It means designing experiences that spark conversation, laughter, and shared memories. These moments may come from a small group gathering, a holiday celebration, an Act of Service, or a themed event. Each one strengthens relationships and helps residents feel like they belong.

Every interaction offers a chance to weave the fabric of community. When residents feel connected, they enjoy their days more fully. They also benefit from the emotional comfort that comes with genuine human connection.

To me, community can refer to the building, the people within it, or the feeling created by the environment. When I think of community, I think of warmth. As a group, we brighten one another’s days with simple acts of kindness. We work toward shared goals and create meaningful experiences together.

Building these connections is essential because moving into senior living is a major life change. Many individuals choose a community to gain a support system of peers who understand their journey. We support this by creating programs and events that offer purpose, engagement, and connection. Having people who understand you — and share your goals — can make all the difference.

Our monthly calendar encourages interaction. We offer programs for many hobbies and interests, making it easy for residents to get involved.

Connecting Within and Beyond Our Doors

I also connect our community with the surrounding town through Arrow’s Acts of Service. We have sponsored food drives, created play mats for the Humane Society, and packaged donated items for expectant mothers at Birthright St. Charles. These projects deepen our sense of purpose and strengthen ties with our neighbors.

Wii bowling remains one of my favorite events. The group has grown quickly, and hearing residents cheer for one another is incredibly rewarding. Several have come close to a perfect game, but the trophy still waits for its first winner.

Our Good Neighbor Team plays a key role in welcoming new residents. Each volunteer has a simple but meaningful job. One delivers the welcome bag. Another invites the new resident to a meal. Someone else encourages them to join a program. Another helps them get comfortable with the Arrow App. Our residents remember what it feels like to be the “new kid,” and they take pride in supporting newcomers from day one.

At the heart of our community, connections are everything. Every conversation, shared laugh, and meaningful moment enriches daily life. As Resident Services Director at The Boulevard Senior Living of St. Peters, I’ve seen how these efforts turn our building into a true home and create memories residents and families treasure.

By prioritizing relationships, engagement, and belonging, we do more than plan events. We build a vibrant and supportive community where everyone can thrive. The connections we nurture make all the difference.
